Birds: Large and Small

The Winter 2019 issue of Salish Magazine tells stories about some of our local birds: some year-round residents and some seasonal ones; some large and some tiny; some land-based and some seabirds. Of course there is a plethora of birds, and we can’t cover but a small fraction of them in a single issue, but Issue #6 takes the first step.

For example, there is a story about a diverse community of birds at a pond and the President Mr. Buffle, and the CEO Mr. Redwing who keep things functioning smoothly.

There is a story about the Snow Geese who winter in Skagit Valley and summer in Russia. Then there are the Purple Martins, our largest members of the swallow family, who now depend largely on people to provide them with housing. A large, year-round resident is the Great Blue Heron. And there is an article about Barn Swallows, smaller cousins of the Purple Martins who are prodigious bug consumers.

There is an editorial that takes a cultural look at the ecosystem perspective, a collection of bird poems, and an article on seabirds. What more could you ask for?

But there is more coming … new content will be added to Issue #6 before we roll out Issue #7 in March 2020.

Reminder: Salish Magazine is available online as a web site at: salishmagazine.org

It has no advertising, and it is free — it is a project of SEA-Media, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We do have costs to cover, so please consider visiting the donation page on the site.

Importance of parasites

One of the things that caught my attention about this radio story was that it was aimed at broadening our notions of what an ecosystem is. While much of the media’s attention is still on the charismatic megafauna, other less obvious and less beloved elements are also of vital importance. When was the last time
