Wow! This book has been around for a while (since 1973), but it’s still a keystone for any personal library about marine life in the Pacific Northwest, from Monterey Bay to northern British Columbia.
Zoologist Eugene Kozloff describes the common plants and animals that inhabit rocky shores, sandy beaches, and quiet bays and estuaries. Almost every species mentioned is illustrated. The text, cross-referenced with figures and plates, describes in precise terms the size, color, activities, and peculiarities of the plants and animals likely to be encountered.
Following an overview of relevant parts of the plant and animal kingdoms, 650 plants and animals are described in chapters organized by broad habitat types: floating docks and pilings, rocky shores of the Puget Sound region, rocky shores of the Pacific Coast, sandy beaches, and quiet bays and salt marshes. These descriptions are accompanied by 700 illustrations and 299 color photographs.
