Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference, 2011

many voices, one seaA science conference isn't what usually springs to mind when I think of media sources, but this conference has indeed had its media high points.  Tuesday night there was a great film festival, and I'll write more about that later.  There is also a marvelous art show which I'll also describe later (but here's a link to one of the artists featured there).

Today's post is to save a space for a matrix of media/outreach ideas that came largely from the audience in a session about media in science outreach.  Watch this space for the contents of that 2-D list in the next few days.

John Hemmen Art

painting by John HemmenThe Treehouse Cafe (Bainbridge Island, WA) usually has exhibits by local artists on its walls, and the art is usually pretty good.  I was in there the other day, and I found the art on the walls remarkable — partly because I just liked it, and partly because it was about fish.  Remarkable indeed because relatively little of our media is about the largest part of our biosphere: our water.  Even on a small island like Bainbridge, ocean themes are not all that common.

John Hemmen was the artist who produced this great work.  Take a look at the gallery of his work on his web site.  One thing I especially like about his work is exemplified in the accompanying image: showing not just fish but relationships.

Shifting Baselines: Common Sense for the Oceans

portrait of Randy OlsonThe Shifting Baselines web site is a treasure trove of videos, serious and funny, professional and student made.  They all share a common theme: shifting baselines.

Shifting Baselines was founded by Randy Olson.  He has written and directed a number of short films and feature documentaries which have premiered at film festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival. Most of his films draw on his science background, involve humor, and address major science issues such as the decline of the world's oceans, the controversy around the teaching of evolution versus intelligent design, and the attacks on global warming science. His company, Prairie Starfish Productions, is based at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, California. He is currently the Director of the Shifting Baselines Ocean Media Project.

Return of the River: Elwha Dam Removal Documentary

This documentary film part of this project is described in a "Media Item" article elsewher on this site.  But as you can see from the project web site (Return of the River) this is much more than just a film in progress.  It's an evolving treasure trove of media about the Elwha created by a dedicated journalist and photographer, John Gussman.

www.elwhafilm.com contains a wide array of digital photographs, videos, fine art prints, and other resources  about the people, the politics and the process of the removal of two dams from the Elwha River.  If you are producing a media project about the dam removal or are simply interested in viewing some images about it, take a look at this web site.

This project is an unfunded labor of love for John Gussman, so please make use of the "donation" button on the web site to contribute to the project's success.

Pacific Marine Imaging

Oceans contain habitats as different from one another as rainforests are from deserts. From coastlines to the deepest ocean trenches there lives a vast array of marine life - some rare, some bizarre, some astonishingly beautiful.

The Pacific Northwest, especially Vancouver Island, and the coast of British Columbia is one of the richest and most diverse areas on earth.  It is home to thousands of plants and animals both above and below the shoreline.

Scott Stevenson's underwater photographs are stunning.  And the intention behind his work shines through his photos as well.  He points out that the images, photography, tutorials, and diving information found throughout his website (8arm.com) are to help promote the education, understanding, and conservation of the marine environment and its inhabitants in the Pacific Northwest.

Jan Kocian

Jan Kocian adorns his incredible underwater photos with drawings that allow the collages to tell more complete stories than the photos would by themselves.Jan's colorful drawings express a tongue-in-cheek humor that brings the underwater world alive with mirth.

His work can be seen on his smugmug site, as well as the Sea Slug Forum and PNW Scuba.
